Brabant Water wants a better world
Brabant Water extracts, purifies, transports and supplies drinking and industrial water of high quality from 30 water production companies to more than 2.4 million residents and companies in the Dutch province of North Brabant. In addition, it supplies customised water and water-related products and services to companies and residential customers. Brabant Water is aware of its social responsibilities and therefore strives for sustainable and environmentally responsible solutions.
Brabant Water wants a liveable world for both current and future generations.
According to Brabant Water, sustainability will be achieved when ecological, economic and social interests are in balance. Developing in this way will contribute to a more efficient, more economical and a more balanced way of dealing with the Earth. Water is an important part of the environment and society. Brabant Water has two priorities:
- Taking care of the resource and nature.
- Taking care of the environment.
In order to reach its green goals, the company has taken various steps towards becoming a climate neutral certified company.
Brabant Water’s Carbon Footprint was 2.4% smaller in 2019 than in 2018. The Footprint includes the water production locations of the drinking water company (with the exception of the industrial water company in Zevenbergen) and its offices. It was calculated in accordance with the GHG protocol and includes business air travel that has been offset with carbon credits.
Brabant Water has calculated its Footprint and is working on climate neutrality. Active measures have been drawn up to minimise the environmental impact of its activities.
Brabant Water stimulates its employees to lease of A-label cars by offering them a lower personal contribution; 56% of their lease cars now have an A-label. Brabant Water also took the initiative to provide the Paleiskwartier in ‘s-Hertogenbosch, a new sustainable neighbourhood, with a shared electric vehicle fleet.
Brabant Water is also a participant in The Dutch Eco Drivers League, in which participating companies strive to have the greenest vehicle fleet in the Netherlands. To provide a baseline measurement, a FuelScan was carried out over 12 months using historical tank data per license plate. During the competition, the FuelMonitor is used in order to clearly and realistically map the savings potential per user in a clear and comprehensive overview.
Brabant Water must comply with the European Energy Directive (EED) and an EED report has been drawn up for each production location. This is driving their energy reduction and is supplemented when new reduction opportunities are identified. The EED measures form the basis for energy savings in every renovation or new construction project. The project team examines which measures are realistic and implements them in the project.
In order to reduce CO2 emissions during the production of drinking water, Brabant Water has deployed more efficient pumps and uses the optimum pressure for pumping. They have also switched to green energy and solar panels have been installed at the production locations on its own buildings and grounds. Some of these solar panels are from an investor and Brabant Water has the rights and the GO certificates for them. There are also plenty of options for installing solar PV on Brabant Water grounds. The forecast for self-generation is relatively conservative and may provide more room for growth. There is also an initiative to collect solar energy on the water, in collaboration with Evides. This would enable Brabant Water to provide itself with all the energy it needs. Investments have been made in energy-efficient lighting and gas consumption has been reduced by 10%. The advanced building management system ensures a reduced consumption of energy for cooling. The computer rooms have also been adapted in order to optimise computer cooling. Construction, purchasing and site management at Brabant Water are all being done sustainably.
Waste and Recycling
Materials and chemicals released during the purification of water can be used by other companies. One hundred percent of this residual waste from Brabant Water is taken to these companies.
Not all emissions from Brabant Water can be completely reduced using the above measures. To further green its Carbon Footprint, Brabant Water uses a combination of high-quality GOs for electricity (real green electricity) and carbon credits to offset the residual emissions. They invest in Cookstoves in Uganda (Gold Standard) and a small-scale hydropower project in India (VCS).

For us, the ‘Climate Neutral Guaranteed’ certification is logical, and the annual audit is an excellent external check of our policy, our footprint and the reduction measures. It also challenges us.”
